What's on the Test?

Test 3 covers two major topic areas: Statistics & Distributions and Exponential & Linear Growth. You'll need to interpret data, calculate descriptive statistics, reason about normal distributions, and apply growth models.

💡 Study Hints

  1. 50th percentile = median. The median splits the data exactly in half — the same thing the 50th percentile does.
  2. Range rule of thumb: Estimated std. deviation ≈ Range ÷ 4. It works best when data is spread evenly.
  3. 68–95–99.7 rule: In a normal distribution, ~68% of data falls within 1 std. dev., ~95% within 2, ~99.7% within 3.
  4. Doubling time formula (approximate): Tdouble ≈ 70 ÷ growth rate %. Exact: T = log(2) ÷ log(1 + r).
  5. Skewness clue: If mean > median, the distribution is right-skewed (pulled by high outliers). If mean < median, it's left-skewed.
  6. Linear vs. exponential growth: Linear grows by a fixed amount each period; exponential grows by a fixed percentage.
  7. Median is best for income data because a few very high earners can distort the mean significantly.
  8. Z-score sign: Negative z-scores are below the mean, positive are above. z = (value − mean) ÷ std. dev.
